Rhyme Like A Girl
RLAG was selected out of hundreds of applications for an American Music Abroad Tour.
Based in New York City, Rhyme Like A Girl (RLAG) has toured Uganda, Benin, Botswana, Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea and run RLAG programming in Nairobi, Kenya, and Dakar, Senegal, as well as South Africa, Brazil, and Ecuador. Rhyme Like a Girl (RLAG) is a collective of women MCs whose commitment to artistry, community, and global travel grew out of Toni Blackman’s vision to transform Hip Hop and use it to make our world a better place. RLAG is an extension of the Freestyle Union, her Echoing Green Fellowship project, and puts the spotlight on the voices of women and girls. A fellowship with Open Society Institute (OSI) enabled her to develop the concept which has gone through many iterations from being an afterschool program that partnered with Girls Inc to now a collective of women MCs who also happen to be amazing teaching artists who can rock most any crowd.
RLAG offerings include artist residencies, masterclasses, and performances. The artists have served as guest lecturers, mentors, and workshop leaders. Six participants have gone on to travel as Hip Hop Ambassadors appearing in the US and various countries around the world.
